Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer known for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants while maintaining a relatively low cost. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations available based on acrylonitrile content, which can range from 18% to 50%. A lower ACN content results in enhanced low-temperature properties but diminished resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, whereas a higher ACN content yields improved resistance to fuels and polar lubricants but poorer low-temperature performance; standard NBRs typically feature 34% ACN content. The cure system of nitriles can be sulfur-cured, which provides better low-temperature properties but can be prone to hardening at elevated temperatures, or peroxide-cured, which offers superior heat resistance and lower compression sets, albeit at a higher cost and more complex processing requirements. This material operates effectively within a temperature range from -40°C (-40°F) to 100°C (212°F).
